Our Os are Back

How about that bottom of the 8th comeback. Huff has made strides toward recovery. Rejoicing was had.

Opening Day Photos

Finally, photos from Opening Day.

I heard more cheering in last night’s game than on Opening Day!

Science Behind Baseball

Last Friday, Talk of the Nation had a program on the science behind baseball. Listen to the program here for a discussion about the effect of lowering the pitching mound and why we support our losing team. The guests include Dan Gordon, author of Your Brain on Cubs.

He says it’s okay, that I can’t help it. Also, my reading list will never get smaller.

Supporting the Os

My friend Mindpinball always finds the best articles. He shared this one, Speak Up and Be Heard, from the Baltimore Sun, in which fans express why they will or will not support the Orioles this year.

It’s worth reading and reveals the ways the Orioles organization has damaged their fan base. They removed “Baltimore” from the jerseys? I see that I have lived in a protective cocoon all these years when I couldn’t get news or information about the Os.

Though I understand and agree with the fans who are disgusted with the salaries (me too) and the steroids (yup!), I think with my heart. I was fed up with the greed and the MLB as long ago as the last strike, but as much as I want to stay away out of principle over these matters, now that I have MASN and can watch the games, I can’t stay away.

Here are my favorite sentiments from the reader’s responses:

How far will I stand by this team? Will I be there to the very end? Of course I will. We are in a rebuilding phase and have enough young talent now to contend in a few years. That is the goal of rebuilding. To stop being a fan now is to quit on your team when they need you the most. So how long will I stay with this team? Forever. Because that’s what true fans do. - Jason Capri

You don’t seem to get it, the Orioles are our team, win or lose. If we want to complain about them that’s OK, but we’ll defend them against attacks by anyone else…The Orioles are in a rebuilding stage, fans realize that it may take a few years to get back on top. But true fans are willing to wait. I have been through the good, the bad and the ugly. But I’ve never lost hope. - Paul, Parsonsburg

Because, that’s just how it is when you bleed orange.

Hypocrite

No sooner had I published my last post than my brain started needling me, “Awfully judgmental thing to say about Orioles fans with your newfound interest in the Retrievers. How about the Panthers and the Ravens? Remind me again how often you watch the games, but you’d be all over that band wagon if they were winning.”

“Oh, shut up! Na uh! That’s not true.” I protested. “I’m being falsely accused.” I never keep an interest in football for very long. As to the Retrievers charge, I’m not in Baltimore to watch them. At any rate, I had to concede my brain’s point, which I think was that 1) I’m a jerk (which it reminds me of many times a day) and 2) everyone doesn’t love baseball the same way I do.

Even so, I still contend that you stand by your team even through the down years. Somewhere in my distorted logic, I suppose that means that the greater part of Baltimore should consist of hard-core Orioles fans because if stinking Boston can do it, then why can’t we? We’re better than them.

While I’m recanting and eating my own words, I also need to apologize for that post (which I hope I deleted already - and if not, I will) where I was complaining about the pink Os caps. While I was in line at Fan Fest, another fan explained that they were for breast cancer. Duh! I feel so stupid. That never occurred to me.

This is why it’s best I keep my mouth shut and my fingers off the keyboard at all times.

Enchanting Sunshine hangs head again. This is getting old.
