Shame on Payton
8. June 2008 by Orioles Fanatic.
I’ve forgotten everything I was going to say about yesterday’s game except the obvious complaints about Trashsel and Ballfate. In the bottom of the ninth, I thought I was having a bad acid flashback to last year even though I’ve never touched the stuff. Jim Hunter made me chuckle with, “Sarfate seems to have lost the strike zone.” Well, now, that’s brand new. We had bigger problems than Sarfate though. Look at Trashsel’s ERA.
Fortunately, it all came out okay in the end and we ended the game 9-5, Toronto scoring four of those runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Good thing for “insurance” runs.
Now, I’ll complain about today. I don’t like to dwell on the negative. There are enough people who do that. I do have to voice my disappointment in Jay Payton though.
In the fourth inning, Payton bunted a ball that bounced up and touched his sleeve. He should have been called out, but despite the protests from the Toronto dugout, umpire Bill Miller let the call stand. So Payton continued his at bat. Next there was a pitch that Miller called a strike. Payton thought it was a ball and was rather irate about it. We didn’t get to see the pitch because the camera was on Amber Theoharis. Nevermind, Payton continued his at bat, now a 1-2 count. Payton popped up the next pitch behind homeplate and it was caught by Toronto catcher, Rod Barahas, in an outstanding grab behind the homeplate netting to end the Orioles at bat.
End of story, right? Nope. Even though Payton already had one gimme and popped out, Payton continued to argue with the ump over the called strike. Miller gave him a lot of leeway, but Payton wouldn’t stop and was finally ejected from the game. Rightly so! Now really!
What’s more is there was another bad call in the Orioles favor. Earlier in the game, Freddie Bynum was tagged on his way to first. The tag brushed the back of his jersey, but he was most certainly out. Nevertheless, he was called safe and went on to score a tying run.
I’m embarassed. We’re not the Red Sox or the Ys. We’re the Orioles. We are good sports and we’re better than that. We don’t win by cheating. I don’t care how high or outside the pitch was, there were already two calls in the Orioles favor that should have been outs. When you shouldn’t be batting anyway, how about being a good sport about a called strike?
Whatever got into Payton? I hope Trembley delivers a few words about respect and picking your battles.
